Utilizing an Alcubierre-metric drive, the crew of the Surveyor-9 jumped 10 million light-years to study the final stages of a galactic-scale orbital decay.

They expected a physics survey. They found a Type III civilization cold war.

THE DISCOVERY

This megastructure is the result of an ancient divorce: two factions once shared a common ancestry before the Arc Engineers obsessed over the Dyson-scale harvest of the accretion disk. While the Arc Engineers remained trapped in the time-dilated gravity of the engine—locked in their original mission to sterilize any biological variables that might threaten their existence—the Aether moved on. Having evolved beyond the conflict, the Aether have become indifferent observers of the very engine they once helped conceive.

To protect their system, the Arc Engineers have gimbaled a relativistic jet into a "sterilization corridor"—a focused beam of high-energy particles designed to prune emerging biological variables. Having suffered a devastating attack in their past, the Arc Engineers now proactively disrupt any potential threats that could eventually interfere with their system's stability.
